Frequently Asked Questions

Should I consider exercising my J&J options?
+

The J&J stock price has risen approximately 45% in the last year*, creating real value for J&J employees who are holding options. This is a natural time to evaluate the amount of value that has already been realized and the amount of potential value that still remains.

This can be done both quantitatively and in relative terms based on your own net worth statement and your appetite for risk. Understanding the tax ramifications and how they integrate into your broader financial plan is essential.

What strategies should I consider to maximize the benefits of RSUs and stock options?
+

Understanding your vesting schedule and the tax implications of each decision is the foundation. From there, the timing of when you sell matters — both for tax efficiency and for managing concentration risk.

Selling vested shares strategically helps diversify your portfolio, and working with a financial advisor ensures your exercises align with your broader financial plan.

With recent 401(k) updates, how can I make sure I’m contributing effectively?
+

JNJ’s new true-up match ensures you’ll still receive the full company match at year-end — even if your contributions vary — as long as you contribute at least 6% of eligible pay in Pre-Tax or Roth each pay period.

Post-tax contributions now require a separate election and no longer receive a match. Structuring contributions across Pre-Tax, Roth, and Post-Tax buckets helps create a tax-diversified portfolio — providing greater flexibility at the income distribution stage.

My Final Average Pay (FAP) pension is frozen — now what?
+

The first step in maximizing your pension benefits is to fully understand how your plan works. JNJ offers two distinct pension plans:

Final Average Pay (FAP)
  • Eligibility: Hired before Dec 31, 2014
  • Vesting: After 5 years of service or at age 55
  • Status: Frozen as of January 1, 2026
  • Early retirement: 4% reduction per year before age 62 (after age 55 with 10 yrs service)
  • Distribution: Monthly payout only — no lump sum
Retirement Value Pension (RVP)
  • Eligibility: Hired after Dec 31, 2014
  • Vesting: After 5 years of service or at age 55
  • Status: Open — FAP employees now accrue under RVP
  • Early retirement: 4% reduction per year before age 62 if service requirements are met
  • Distribution: Lump sum or annuity options available
