Biography

Erik is the Chief Investment Officer at University of Michigan, responsible for directing the University’s more than $11 billion of investment programs, which includes the 9th largest endowment of an institution of higher learning. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the University of Michigan is one of the best-known and respected higher education institutions in the United States.  Founded in 1817 as one of the first public universities in the United States, the University of Michigan today is consistently ranked among the nation’s top universities with students from all 50 states and over 100 different countries. Since joining the University as its first Chief Investment Officer in the fall of 1999, Erik has established the University’s Investment Office as a highly regarded institutional investor and has seen the endowment grow from being the 17th largest endowment when he joined to being 9th in size today with a value of nearly $10 billion.  Erik received Institutional Investor Magazine’s Award for Excellence in Investment Management for Endowments in 2007 to recognize his outstanding achievement, was named Public Endowment CIO of the Decade in 2015, and ranked among the top 20 CIOs in the world by Chief Investment Officer magazine. Leading a staff of twelve investment professionals, Erik develops and implements investment strategy for all of the University’s investment programs, evaluates current and prospective investment managers, explores alternative investment strategies, and ensures successful communication and relations with the University and its Investment Advisory Committee. Erik chairs the Investment Committee of the Skillman Foundation in Detroit, serves on the State of Michigan’s Investment Advisory Committee, the Detroit Renaissance Venture Capital Fund Board of Directors, Okabena Investment Services Investment Advisory Committee, and is a member of the CIO Advisory Council of Alternative Investment Management, Inc. He has been a trusted advisor to TIFF (The Investment Fund for Foundations) and EMGF (Capital International’s Emerging Markets Growth Fund). Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Erik held positions with increasing responsibilities at a corporate investment office which was charged with overseeing $22 billion in pension and other plan assets.  While there, he helped develop overall investment strategy, lead the global asset allocation activities, and managed the U.S. and non-U.S. equity programs.  He also has prior experience in investor relations and corporate finance. Erik is a CFA charterholder.
