Biography

Erik Lundberg is the Chief Investment Officer at University of Michigan, responsible for directing the University’s $20 billion long term investment portfolio that includes the university’s endowment. Since joining the university as its first Chief Investment Officer, Mr. Lundberg has established the university’s Investment Office as a highly regarded institutional investor and has seen the endowment consistently deliver top quartile performance and growing to over $19 billion in value and the 9th largest in size from being the 17th largest endowment at $2.5 billion in value when he joined.

Leading a staff of twenty investment professionals, Mr. Lundberg develops and implements investment strategy for the university’s long term investment portfolio, which includes one of the most diverse groups of asset managers of any university according to a 2024 study by the Knight Foundation and is on track to become Net Zero by 2030.

Mr. Lundberg received Institutional Investor Magazine’s Award for Excellence in Investment Management for Endowments 2007 to recognize his outstanding achievement, was named Public Endowment CIO of the Decade in 2015 and has been repeatedly ranked among the top 25 CIOs in the world by Chief Investment Officer Magazine. In 2024, he was named Endowment CIO of the Year at the Institutional Investor Allocator’s Choice awards.

Mr. Lundberg is director of Father Flanagans Fund for Needy Children and the Detroit Renaissance Venture Capital Fund, serves on the investment advisory committees of the Skillman Foundation in Detroit and Cerity/Agility – a leading OCIO firm, and is a member of the CIO Advisory Council of Alternative Investment Management, Inc. He has been a trusted advisor to TIFF (The Investment Fund for Foundations), State of Michigan’s Pension Funds, Capital International’s Emerging Markets Growth Fund, and Okabena Investment Services.
