Biography

Sawyer is a Senior Associate in our Boston office where he serves as a research analyst conducting due diligence, security selection, and trading for firm’s equity strategies.

Prior to joining Cerity Partners, Sawyer was a Trading and Market Research Associate with Bainco International Investors, where he assisted with equity due diligence, and directed trading of firm positions. He is a member of the firm’s Private Client Portfolio committee. Sawyer’s prior experience includes investment, estate, and tax planning at Ayco, the financial planning arm of Goldman Sachs, as well as assisting with equity and fund due diligence at Goldman Sachs, Neon Liberty Capital Management, and Brown Brothers Harriman & Co.

Q:

Was there a specific incident in your life that made it clear you were made for this career?

I don’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t interested in what companies around the world were doing. Many grew up wanting to be a doctor, a fireman, a pilot- I grew up wanting to absorb what was happening around me and create grounded thoughts on what effects those events would lead to.

Why is your work important, especially today?

We are coming out of an age where many people could simply throw darts at a dartboard and make money. Single stock management, portfolio construction, and well executed due diligence will be more important than ever as people realize the company you invest money in actually needs to do more than sell a story.

What should your clients know the most about you?

You are my top priority. I will never suggest an investment, make a trade, or agree to anything that I don’t genuinely believe is in your best interest.

What kind of clients work best for you?

A curious client is a great client. Curiosity pushes everyone involved to compound their thoughts into something more powerful than any individual can do on their own.

What do you do in your personal life that helps you help your clients?

When you do what you love, you have no off switch. Whether I am talking to a client or a complete stranger, I want to know what they think about the future.

How would you describe your best day doing what you do?

The quality of my day can be measured in how much I learn. I couldn’t tell you what day has been my best day- they are all the best.

What does the world need now more than anything?

Rationality. We live in a world where people don’t want to read past the headline or verify their own thinking. We need to work to be informed and think about future generations.
