Biography

Ty is a Partner and Practice Leader of Cerity Partners’ Retirement Plan Services Group where he specializes in helping public, private, and nonprofit organizations design “blue ribbon” retirement plans. His areas of expertise include plan design, fiduciary governance, vendor management, and Fiduciary Based Investment Consulting™.

As a twenty-seven-year veteran of the retirement plan industry, Ty was instrumental in the design of Cerity Partners’ proprietary Plan Health Smartcard™ scoring system that helps plan sponsors quickly quantify the overall health of their retirement plans relative to peers. In addition, he created the Blue Ribbon Retirement Plan Award™, which recognizes plan sponsors who have embraced industry best practices and given their employees a clear path to achieving retirement readiness.

Prior to joining Cerity Partners, Ty was a Managing Partner and Senior ERISA Consultant with Blue Prairie Group, where he led the Institutional Retirement Practice Group and worked with their largest retirement plan clients. Earlier in his career, he honed his investment knowledge as a Key Account Executive with RidgeWorth Investments and built the firm’s defined contribution investment-only business. Ty was also the Institutional Business Development Officer at SunTrust Bank, focusing solely on helping Fortune 1000 companies with their retirement plans. He began his career at Great-West Life as an employee benefits specialist.

Q:

Was there a specific incident in your life that made it clear you were made for this career?

As soon as I took my first job out of college as an employee benefits consultant, I knew I wanted to help people retire with dignity so they can live out their dreams on their terms. That was over 27+ years ago, and I still love it! Helping individuals achieve a comfortable retirement never gets old.

Why is Retirement Plan Advisory important, especially today?

I specialize in simplifying complex retirement issues for plan sponsor clients by utilizing my deep experience to drive better outcomes for participants and reduced liability for plan sponsors. This area of expertise includes strategic plan design, fiduciary governance, investment menu design and vendor management.

What should your clients know the most about you?

I am a coach at heart. I love working in a team environment, planning and building strategies to help my clients achieve their goals. I may not be able to help everyone, but I get up each morning with the notion that if I can help one more person and one more plan sponsor improve their chances of success, I just might make a dent in the retirement crisis we face in America.

What does the world need now more than anything?

Right now the people of the world need to take a breath. We need more compassion and empathy for different points of view. We need more hugs and smiles, a helping hand and the ability to laugh at ourselves.
